A Single Man

Our first movie back was a wonderful surprise. Well know fashion designer Tom Ford has created a visual masterpiece in A Single Man. From the first moments of the film there was a beauty evident in the color, the music, the actors, and the overall style. The film is based on the 1964 novel by Christopher Isherwood.

Colin Firth plays British university professor George Falconer who has lost his partner of sixteen years, Jim, played by Matthew Goode. Silently, we witness the devastation of a broken heart. We are drawn in by Ford’s magical ability to communicate George’s despair through artistic cinematic images that are simultaneously beautiful and alarming.

The film follows George during a single day as he struggles to find meaning to his life after Jim’s death. Buoyed by his good friend Charley (brilliant character portrayal by Julianne Moore) Jim finds himself haunted by his memories of love and tortured by the enormity of its loss. He is at once every man and his own man presenting us with a broken inner spirit that must be rebuilt to guarantee his survival. Similarly, we are all faced, at one point or another, with crises that threaten to steal us from our own lives. Ford creates a cinematic journey of one man’s self discovery that will embolden all filmgoers with a determination to really see our lives up close and in detail, just as George does.

This story is engaging and rewarding. We hope you find time to see it.

The Rave Review rated this film a 4 and 5 out of 5.
