After a long, fun filled summer vacation, it seemed only fitting that we return to our movie world with 500 Days of Summer. It became apparent shortly after the film started, however, that Summer was actually a woman’s name and the story was actually about love.
Director Marc Webb has created a refreshing, off beat romantic comedy with a fabulous soundtrack to match. Looking at his body of directorial work, Webb definitely has a strong tie to music. His unique storytelling takes its form with 500 randomly featured days in the lives of Tom Hansen and Summer Finn.
At its core, 500 Days is a story of knowing ourselves. It confirms the theory that to know and experience real love, you must love yourself first. Of course, this will happen at different times for all of us, so when two people’s lives cross romantically, we can never know what stage of the self-knowing journey each one is on. Which is the basic story of this film. Sounds boring? It’s not. The characters were perfectly cast, and as a result, totally believable. Joseph Gordon-Levitt brings an honesty to his role that draws the audience into his journey with an empathy that is the actor’s real challenge. His infatuation with Summer Finn is nothing short of perfectly real.
Zooey Deschanel as Summer Finn is outstanding. We can understand Tom’s attraction to her beautiful smile, her wit and her girlish charm. She was very entertaining to watch on screen!
Enjoy a different kind of film before it goes! The Angelika Plano never disappoints and our first day back was a stellar one!
The Rave Review gave this film an average of 4-5 out of 5.
